The Clinician’s Online Guide to Psychiatry & the Law

This site was designed by GAP’s Committee on Psychiatry and the Law. Jacqueline Landess, MD, JD and Jacob M. Appel, MD, JD, MPH, MFA, HEC-C, served as co-chairs and editors of this project. This site is not intended to give any formal legal or medical advice or to be a comprehensive exploration of complex and highly nuanced medical-legal issues. Rather, it is intended as a starting point to assist clinicians with basic information regarding frequently asked medical-legal questions and common forensic and ethical challenges in psychiatry. This site is not updated in real time and may not be up to date with recent developments in the law. We hope that this site will meet the need for a free, easily accessible and centralized resource that provides information on pertinent concepts within law and psychiatry for psychiatrists and trainees.
